Willow Caswell Fire Department
In November of 2024 the service area boards for both Willow and Caswell initiated a formal consolidation to create the Willow‑Caswell Fire Service Area. The Willow‑Caswell Fire Department already represented the long‑standing partnership between the Willow and Caswell Fire Service Areas, two neighboring districts that operated functionally as a unified emergency response organization for many years. Working under a shared Fire Chief, common operating procedures, and a combined pool of on‑call responders, the department built a cohesive team capable of responding to hundreds of emergencies across the region. Personnel trained together, deployed together, and operated with the same uniforms and insignia—reflecting an identity rooted in collaboration.
Through wildfires, storms, and major incidents in the Matanuska‑Susitna Borough, the department’s joint efforts have consistently demonstrated efficiency, reliability, and a strong commitment to community protection. The goal is to strengthen fire protection and streamline operations through unified planning, reduced administrative duplication, more effective deployment of equipment and personnel, and a single capital and operating budget. Since the two service areas already function as one organization, consolidation will enhance efficiency while reducing the cumulative mill rate for many residents. Boundaries for the new district remain unchanged, but the area will benefit from clearer governance, improved strategic planning, and a unified approach to serving the 2,138 residents across the region.
