Butte Fire Department
The Butte Fire Department was established in 1953 and provides fire protection services to the Butte and Knik River communities. The Butte Fire Department provides fire services to nearly 5,000 residents over a 43-square-mile radius that stretches from Mile 1 Old Glenn Highway to Mile 15.5 Old Glenn Highway and 11 Miles up Knik River Road to the Alaska Glacier Lodge. In the beginning, when the Butte Fire Department was established, it operated out of a sawmill with 8 volunteers until the 1960’s, when the first Butte Fire Station was built off George Plumley Road. In 1978, a new public safety building was constructed off the Old Glenn Highway, which housed an engine and two water tenders. Today, the Butte Fire Department operates from two public safety buildings with three engines, three tenders, two brush trucks, a rescue truck, four command/support units, and a variety of off-road/wilderness rescue resources. The department has over 30 active members who respond to approximately 300 calls for service annually.
